There is supposed to be backward compatibility when using the Lync 2013 Client SDK, but there are definitely some rough edges. Anything written in the 2010 SDK works great in the 2013/S4B client though.

The 2010 and 2013 SDK are very similar, 2013 adds some extra features, mostly around desktop and application sharing.  So, my advice would be to use the 2010 SDK unless you hit a feature which means that you have to use the 2013 SDK. If so, move to that but be sure to continuously test with a 2010 client to make sure that the backward compatibility is all working OK.
