First off, let me just say that I am not a computer novice and I have already spent a good deal of time going through similar threads on this issue.  Many of them contain responses from various partners giving all sorts of disclaimers and reminders about the fact that FPSE are no longer supported, they are dead, will not be supported, etc.  Point made, we heard you.  Please, if you are not able to provide any constructive assistance to the issue I am reporting here, DO NOT BOTHER TO REPLY TO THIS THREAD.

I have a client with a website that is using the legacy FPSE.  Presently there is a problem with the contact form on their website.  This contact form uses FrontPage style elements and obviously requires FPSE.  Whenever anyone submits a message on the contact form, they receive the following error:

Not Found
The requested URL /_vti_bin/shtml.exe/contact.htm was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

After some research, it is suggested that having uploaded the contact.htm via FTP might have possibly broken the form and started the error above.  The recommended advice is to publish the contact.htm page using FrontPage or Expression Web, or some web authoring tool that supports FPSE so that the page can publish and propagate the way it is intended.

This leads to the next problem.  I am using the recently made FREE version of EX4 and trying to publish the page.  Forget publishing the page even, let's talk simply CONNECTING to the site.  I have verified that my host has FPSE installed.  In fact, I have uninstalled and reinstalled them several times from cPanel/WHM, so they are definitly in place.  I've also turned my firewall off.

Whenever I try to publish, I get an almost instant error from EW4 with the following:

"Unable to open 'site name'.
Server error: The web server at 'site name' does not appear to have FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
Possible causes:
1. The web server may not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy setting may be incorrect.
4. An error may have occurred in the web server.
If this server does not support FrontPage Server Extensions, Expression Web may still be able to publish the server via FTP or WebDAV. Please select one of these options and try again."

If I change the userid/pw or blank the fields, I get the same error dialog above almost right away.  It's like there is no actual attempt being made to connect.

Unfortunately I have no other website to use to even test if it is just an issue with this particular site on the server, or if it is a general EW4 issue.

My host is using cPanel/WHM and it is the plain vanilla install of server side FPSE which have existed for years.  I realize they are no longer officially supported by Microsoft, but cPanel does support them or else there would be no way to install or uninstall the component from the server.

My question is:  Does Expression Web 4 still support FPSE, or is this feature broken in some way?

The answer to this will be helpful, so I don't sit here and waste time trying to get this working on EW4.

I am simply trying to fix this issue for my client so their contact form works again. NO they are not willing to buy a new website, and NO I am not going to spend more time redesigning this page so that it does not use FPSE. Yes it's a legacy function, but so are COBOL and other technologies which worked years past and are still relied on for legacy apps.

In short I have the same conditions that you do and I have had Expression Web 2,3 and 4 and I get the same error under the same conditions. I am sorry to report to you that I wasted far to many hours attempting to overcome this issue and I have been unsuccessful to date. Without typing a bunch of useless steps, I was lucky enough to have had a copy of the original web site stored on a local drive. Once I uploaded it using an old machine with FP the problem was solved but not really because editing it going forward with MSE4 (or any program) will cause the error to return. In summary, all the evidence points to the publish using FPSE does not function period.
