So, the question came up this afternoon about dealing with SharePoint content created by staff who are no longer at the company.

Someone asked me about what policies are implemented regarding mysite and farm site data.

I replied that I was not aware of any policy currently implemented. I myself am a bit hesitant to institute such a policy because it might result in useful data being deleted.

What do other SharePoint 2010 admins do in these situations?

I did discover that, behind today's question was the fact that a former employee who has left still shows up in the mysite "organization" chart as reporting to someone. The user has been deleted from Active Directory, but still shows up as if they are reporting to someone.

1. So starting there, is there a way to remove a user from the data used in the org charts WITHOUT deleting their actual content?

2. Is there a way to send someone (I have no idea how such a someone would be defined) a warning about a user's content about to be deleted - or even better, a process to notify someone that they need to delete the data?

3. What about mysites?

4. Is there a way to generate a report listing all the users who SharePoint 2010 knows about but which are not in Active Directory?  I tried one script from codeplex, but it keeps giving the farm admin account an error that says:

By default (assuming you hvae enabled User profile Sync) the following process will happen when a user is deleted in Active Directory.

1. On the next User Profile Sync they will be marked as missing from the Import.
2. When the MySite Cleanup timer job runs the following will happen:

• The profile of any user missing from the import will be deleted.  This should remove them from the org chart.
• The manager (as specified in AD) will be made the Secondary Site Collection Admin for that user's mysite
• an email will be sent to the manager saying that they have 14 days to retrieve Intellectual Property from the mysite before it will be deleted
• MySites whose profiles were deleted 15 days ago will be deleted.
• Content stored in regular sites will not be effected
• User's names will remain in Site Collection User tables to retain authorship information on lists and libraries.
