I downloaded/installed Expression Encoder 4 to use the included SDK. I decided to run the screen capturer to try it out and after displaying the small screen capture window for a few seconds it promptly crashed with a "Expression Encoder 4 has stopped working" window and no additional information. I downloaded and installed Silverlight 4 thinking this may be the problem and tried the screen capture app again. This time it worked.  I then went to my app and added the necessary references to use the encoder's screen capture ability from within my application. It crashed the first time, worked the second, crashed the third. I then tried to re-run the screen capture app that comes with the encoder download (the one that crashed originally) and although it worked previously, it started crashing repeatedly again with the "Expression encoder has stopped working" window. Any ideas what may be wrong? I'm using Win7 64, 8 Gb ram, core i7, .NET 4. My app that made use of the encoder 4 SDK is using C# .NET 4, Managed DirectX (the directX animation is running at the same time the encoder is recording).

I uninstalled the standard version of Encoder 4 and downloaded the trial version of Expression Studio Ultimate 4. At install I deselected everything except Expression Encoder 4 and installed. Although this package is supposed to contain Encoder 4 Pro, when I ran the screen capture app I got the warning balloon claiming that the screen capture is limited to 10 minutes. I also got the same behavior i.e. screen capture window appears, warning balloon appears, then "Expression Encoder screen capture has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." window appears 3 or 4 seconds later.

On a hunch I tried running the screen capture app as administrator. It worked! But wait..let's try again to make sure this behavior is deterministic, so I closed the app and ran again as administrator. It crashes with the same behavior I described above. Try again as administrator, crashes again. It will occasionally work which seems to imply some sort of probability going on.

I then installed the standard version on my desktop machine (also an i7) and it works just fine.
