The old Media encoder 9 was easily able to encode 800 x 600 screen capture avi files created by programs like Hypercam. The most typical video compressor used by HyperCam was RLE and now MS Video1 (CRAM).

I am lost as how to use Expression 4 for encoding these avi files made by Hypercam without having huge bitrates! I use these for training videos and have customers around the globe with poor internet connections. With encoder 9 I was able to create bitrates of 150 kbps or less that looked decent.

What do you recommend for expression encoder settings?

Am I stuck using the Expression screen capture tool for the best quality?

If I am stuck with the expression screen capture tool, can I easily load it onto other peoples computers who will be capturing the training?

Hello,

You can certainly do both scenarios. You can screen capture with Hypercam or the Encoder Screen Capture tool and then re-encode to a lower bitrate. After you import the avi or the xesc(screen capture media file) into Encoder, go to the Encode panel and expand the video tab. You can set the bitrate there to whatever value you would like. A lower bitrate may lose some quality but I did a screen capture of a 800x600 at 150kb as you suggested and had no problems with my output.
